Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the courage for? Because you were afraid of failing or making a fool of yourself?

You are not alone! We all prefer to stay in our “comfort zone”. After all, it’s safe, restful and wonderfully comfortable there.

And although our comfort zone is an important and valuable part of our lives, it’s worth taking the plunge more often and going beyond the boundaries we’ve set for ourselves.

In this blog post, we’ll show you effective strategies you can use to push yourself beyond.

Where your comfort zone begins – and where it ends

We’ve all heard of the comfort zone. However, sometimes it’s not that easy to define its boundaries. Let’s try it this way: The comfort zone is an area where you feel comfortable and safe.

You operate within it, for example, when you repeatedly order the same dish at your favourite Italian restaurant or when you regularly spend your lunch break with the same colleagues.

But it also includes parts of your mental world, such as firmly held assumptions (what you think about the world) and beliefs (what you think about yourself).

Figuratively speaking, you can think of your comfort zone as being like a comfortable pair of sweatpants. You’ve been wearing them for years, they’re comfortable, and they’ve stood the test of time.

The problem? Personal growth usually happens outside of your comfort zone! That is, exactly when we are forced to face new challenges and make new experiences.

That means: If we never have the courage to leave our comfort zone, we narrow ourselves down. We thus let pass opportunities that could be an enrichment for our lives!

The 5 best strategies to get out of your comfort zone

1. Be observant

In order to step out of your comfort zone, you first have to identify it.

Observe yourself in your everyday life:

  • Where do you unconsciously choose the more comfortable path?
  • Where have patterns and structures become deeply ingrained in your life?

Become aware of your habits. Only when you know your limits you can work on overcoming them.

2. Take small steps

No one expects you to change your whole life overnight. You shouldn’t either. Start with small things – like intermittent fasting!

The regular breaks in eating are a great tool to get you out of your comfort zone in small steps. You learn a lot about yourself and strengthen your willpower in the long run.

If you want to know how exactly intermittent fasting works on a mental level, read our blog post on the topic.

3. Focus on your reward

When you step out of your comfort zone, you’re stepping into unknown territory. So you don’t know what’s coming. Maybe you’re afraid something will go wrong.

That’s why it’s all the more important to look at all the positives effects (the rewards) that are waiting for you, once you did it.

Many great things are waiting for you:

As you frequently try new things and gain experience, you develop greater confidence in your abilities over time and strengthen your self-confidence.

You’ll feel proud of yourself for overcoming challenges, feel more satisfaction and curiosity, and discover things you never imagined you’d actually enjoy.

With these tempting prospects in mind, the step into the “unknown” becomes a bit easier, doesn’t it? 😉

4. Let yourself be inspired by others

In order to step out of your comfort zone, you don’t have to completely start from scratch. Not to be misunderstood: You don’t need to imitate others, ultimately it’s your path. But a look beyond your own nose is sometimes valuable.

Maybe you have one or two people in your environment who totally inspire you with their way of life? Use this inspiration to find your own way.

5. Reward yourself for your courage

Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can take effort and strength. So don’t forget to think of yourself as well and reward yourself every time you were brave enough to do something new!

A great side effect is that promising yourself a reward is a great motivation for your next step on the way to your goals.

How to finally break out of your comfort zone

“The first step is always the hardest”. We all know that saying. It’s also true when it comes to breaking through your own boundaries.

The good news: You can train yourself to be brave!

It may not happen overnight and it may not always work right away.

But if you set yourself small goals and allow yourself to take breaks in your comfort zone, you’ll gradually gain more self-confidence and discover completely new sides of yourself. A wonderful outlook, isn’t it?

My biggest fear is to excercise whilst fasting and get weak and hungry and my legs go! This would be a major problem if I’m out on my mtb in the middle of the countryside.

Hi Sean, no worries. In fact, working out and intermittent fasting are a great combination and you can even gain muscles during intermittent fasting. We wrote a blog article about that which you may find interesting. You can check it out here: https://www.bodyfast.app/en/how-to-gain-muscle-with-fasting/ It’s important to always listen to your body. Especially when fasting is still new for you, we recommend less physically exhausting types of sport, e.g., Yoga or Pilates. Happy BodyFasting! 😊
