How to Reconcile Intermittent Fasting With Your Family Life

fasting-and-family-life

Intermittent fasting and family life are not always easy to combine. Fixed times for family meals, a lack of understanding, temptations everywhere… These are all challenges in everyday life with partners and children.

But that doesn’t mean that you as a mom or dad, as a partner, you as a family person have to hide or even give up intermittent fasting.

We have a few strategies for you in dealing with the typical challenges in everyday family life. So you can easily integrate intermittent fasting into your life without feeling guilty.

How do I explain intermittent fasting to my partner/child?

Talk to your family about it. Explain your family why you have chosen this method. And that with intermittent fasting you support your health and feel better in your skin.

Tell them about the positive effects, which are even scientifically proven. To illustrate the processes, you can show your family, for example, the chart of fasting stages in the BodyFast app. You’ll find it when swiping to the right on your fasting clock. And here is an exciting blog article on the subject.

Often, the initial skepticism then fades. You convey to your loved ones that the matter is really important to you and take away their unfounded worries.

What do I do if I can’t participate in family meals?

Intermittent fasting does not require you to give up certain meals. You decide on which days, at which times and for how long you want to fast. You will find a plan that suits your everyday life since there are many possibilities.

As for the family, set fixed times for eating together and make it special. Arrange it nicely, take time to talk and enjoy it. That way, your food will taste even better.

How do I taste the food when cooking?

Cooking during a fasting period? Sometimes that just can not be avoided and also brings small challenges. But do not give up!

Sure, you can’t taste food during fasting without breaking your fast. But you will be surprised what a natural sense you have for the right seasoning.

The rule is: less is more! Start slowly, involve your family, and let them check in between. You can always spice things up, as tastes are different anyways.

How do I resist temptations?

Sometimes it feels like torture when your loved ones next to you are crunching and smacking their lips with relish while you yourself want to remain firm.

A change in perspective can help: Think of the challenge as a workout. Every time you persevere, your willpower muscle grows, and soon you’ll be able to look at situations like this in a much more relaxed way. Because you know you can do without.

If it becomes unbearable: Distract yourself! Walk a few steps, read a book, listen to some music. The moment will pass and you can enjoy your food again in your eating window.

How to successfully integrate intermittent fasting into everyday family life

When you take a closer look, the challenges of intermittent fasting to your family routine don’t seem as insurmountable as you first thought, do they?

That’s the beauty of the method: Intermittent fasting gives you the freedom to customize it. You can schedule your fasting times to fit into your daily routine and family life.

Always remember: You are doing it for yourself! And if you’re doing well, your loved ones will benefit too.

Hi Teresa, if you just started out with intermittent fasting, we would recommend reading our blog article for beginner fasters. You can check it out here: https://www.bodyfast.app/en/intermittent-fasting-beginners-guide. E.g., we recommend starting with shorter fasting periods, e.g. 14, 15, or 16 hours. Please also feel free to just download the app and give it a try. If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to send us an email to info@bodyfast.app. Happy BodyFasting 😊 We wish you all the best!
